Discover What’s in My Natural Medicine Cabinet – 19 Tried & Tested Remedies

natural remedies sitting on a table

Whenever I need medicine, I always go for the most natural option first. I’ve been trying out products and remedies for years and finally have the perfect natural medicine cabinet (although I’m always learning and adding to it). A big question I get is what I use for certain ailments so I’ve put together this complete list of all the natural remedies in our medicine cabinet. I actually have a lot of these products in a little plastic storage bin that I call my “travel first aid kit” and bring it anytime we will be away from the house for more than a day.

The information below is from our own experiences and what has worked well for us! I encourage you to always do your own research for what will be the best for you and your family.

All Good Goop Salve

This salve is one of my top products in my natural medicine kit that I always bring with me. It’s good for so many things because it contains tons of healing herbs including calendula, comfrey, plantain, lavender, and yarrow. It’s a base of olive oil, aloe vera, and beeswax and doesn’t have any sketchy ingredients in it. We’ve used it on stings, cuts, scrapes, rashes, shingles, and even a broken bone. They have a glass jar and a little travel tube, so this is one to make sure you always have with you.

Active Skin Repair Spray

This is the other product I take with me everywhere we go. It’s active ingredient is a molecule called HOCI. HOCI is a naturally occurring molecule that our bodies produce to promote healing. It’s a powerful anti-bacterial agent and perfect for wound care without any side effects. We use this in our house for stings, cuts scrapes, and scratches (especially when the cat accidentally gets you). I use it in place of an antibacterial spray to sanitize a wound right when it happens.

Zand Herbal Mist Throat Spray

We’ve been using this throat spray in my household since I was a kid in the early 2000’s. It’s been in our natural medicine cabinet pretty much my entire life, and for good reason because it really works! Anytime we feel a tickle in our throat or a cold coming on we grab this throat spray and use it. We make sure to always have it on hand.

Apple Cider Vinegar

You probably already know that ACV is good for so many things! I make sure to take it with a cinnamon stick and honey anytime I get sick. My husband drinks it on a daily basis for overall health. I like to drink it right away when I feel like I’m coming down with something.

Here’s my favorite yummy ACV drink recipe!

Tip: Make sure to add the ACV at the end to the warm water – you don’t want to add it to boiling water because it will kill the good stuff you want!

  1. Heat some water (I use an electric kettle)
  2. Put a spoonful of honey and a cinnamon stick in a glass mug
  3. Pour in enough water to melt the honey (about 1/4 of the size of your mug) and stir it around until the honey is melted
  4. Pour in filtered water until your mug is almost full (leaving room for the ACV)
  5. Pour in the ACV – there is no specific amount because it will depend on the taste you like, but I use about 1 TBS of ACV

Wonderbelly Antacid

I discovered this when I was pregnant and recently added it to my natural medicine cabinet. Regular antacid has so many harmful ingredients and many even had artificial dyes. This antacid works amazing even on pregnancy heartburn and doesn’t have any of the nasty ingredients found in conventional antacids.

Bentonite Clay

This is what I use anytime someone is stung by a bee. The clay helps to soothe the sting and pull out the venom. It’s also great for soothing other types of bug bites and poison ivy or poison oak.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is good for a million things and has been used for health throughout history. One thing I use it for oil pulling especially when I have a toothache. You just swish about a teaspoon of coconut oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes and it is so soothing. Coconut oil is antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal.

Peppermint Essential Oil

I like to keep this in a ready to use roller bottle that’s already dilluted with a carrier oil. It’s great for headaches, nausea, or muscle aches. For a headache or nausea I just roll it on my wrists so that I can smell the soothing smell of peppermint. For muscle aches I just roll it right on the achy area.

Hydrogen Peroxide

You probably already know hydrogen peroxide can be used for wounds but we use it in a different way. Anytime we feel a sore throat coming on or an itchy ear, we put some hydrogen peroxide in our ear and let it sit for about 10 minutes. I don’t think there’s any studies to prove this one but it’s an old wives tale that seems to actually work based on my experience. Just make sure not to do this all the time because it can dry out your skin in your ear if you do it every day.

Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is has a lot of little pores so it can trap chemicals. It’s used for helping to absorb some poisons and gases. It’s a great home remedy for food poisoning and gas in your stomach.

Be aware if you take any medications, it is possible the charcoal could absorb those so keep that in mind.

Bandages

I always keep bandages of all different sizes in the medicine cabinet and first aid kit. The company, Patch makes non-toxic bamboo ones that are infused with coconut oil and activated charcoal and don’t contain PFAS.

Epsom Salt

We like to keep epsom salt on hand for baths. Epsom salt breaks down into magnesium and sulfate in water. We love epsom salt baths anytime we are sore or achy, feel sick, or have itchy or dry skin. The epsom salt with warm water is incredibly soothing.

Menthol Inhaler

I keep one of these Olbas menthol inhalers in our medicine cabinet at all times. When I’m super congested from a cold and just want to get a breath through my nose this thing is a lifesaver. You just put it up to your nostril and breathe in and the vapors immediately clear out your nose and sinuses.

Colloidal Silver

This one’s a great addition to your natural medicine cabinet because it has so many uses. Silver particles are antibacterial and reduce inflammation. We like to keep a bottle on hand to use for everything from a sore throat to rashes.

Ginger or Ginger Tea

Ginger is a powerful medicinal herb that’s great for a bunch of things. It’s great for settling an upset stomach and nausea which is why people drink ginger ale when they aren’t feeling well. It contains the compound gingerol which is anti-inflammatory and has antioxident effects. It’s good when you’re trying to fight off a cold or when you need to reduce inflammation. I like to keep read

Turmeric

Turmeric is closely related to ginger and also has anti-inflammatory properties thanks to the circumin found in it. I like to keep turmeric capsules and take it when I have a headache.

Clove Oil

Clove oil is my favorite remedy for a toothache. It’s antibacterial , antimicrobial, antiseptic, and antifungal and also has numbing properties (anesthetic) making it the perfect remedy for a toothache. To use on a toothache I like to mix a few drops of pure clove oil with a Tbs of carrier oil (like coconut oil) and then dip a cotton swab in and place the cotton swab on the toothache. I also like to oil pull with coconut oil (by swishing coconut oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes) and adding a drop of clove oil can help relieve the pain from a toothache. It’s also great for oral health in general because of it’s antibacterial properties. Other uses include using it for joint pain, nausea, headaches, or as an insect repellent.

Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry is a powerful remedy for the common cold. It has tons of vitamin C and antioxidants to help boost your immune system to help your body fight off illness. I take it at the first sign of getting sick.

Genexa Products

Sometimes a natural remedy isn’t enough and you may want to use western medicine. The downfall is that most medicine has toxic ingredients added to it. The last thing you want when you don’t feel well is added dyes, parabens, or artificial flavors. Genexa is a brand that has created products like acetaminophen and other common medicines you would find at the drug store without the added toxic ingredients.

We like to keep some of these on hand in case we ever need them so that we don’t have to use the more toxic ones you find at the store.

While I think western medicine has it’s place, I really prefer to use these natural remedies first whenever possible. There are so many amazing and effective natural products that I find work even better than western medicine a lot of the time!

Our bodies are amazing at healing ourselves from common illnesses if we give it the chance. It can feel good to just mask the symptoms with over the counter drugs, but I think it can slow down the healing process.

When I really do need western medicine I check if Genexa has it first to avoid the unnecessary added dyes and toxic ingredients.
